You can recolor a line bordering a region so that the region remains intact but the line is no longer seen; this produces a self-traced line:
In ink display mode, the trace lines are shown in the default color, usually black. As you color the lines to make them self-traced, these lines are shown in the colors you inked them with.
When you ink with the Ink tool, only the trace lines are affected; the painted regions are left unchanged. As you move the Ink tool over the line, a thick line of ink is left behind; when you finish the stroke and lift the pen or release the mouse button, the thick line disappears and the ink is applied to the original line only.
The finished line is now colored with the same color as one of the regions on either side of it. In the final output, the line will not be visible. You can check how it looks by selecting the draft display mode.
